Former chairman of Rampura Phul market committee Rocky Kansal and former local body president Happy Bansal have been booked for allegedly attacking two polling agents for Congress candidate from Faridkot, Joginder Singh Panjgrain, with sharp-edged weapons on Sunday evening.

Kansal and Bansal are Akali leaders and several other unidentified workers have also been booked for the Sunday morning assault.
The victims, Rakesh Kumar and Rajesh Kumar, are brothers and were attacked at their shop at the local vegetable market, leaving them seriously injured.

Rakesh has been admitted to a Rampura Phul hospital, while Rajesh had been referred to a medical college Faridkot with head injuries.

Former Congress MLA and party vice-president Malwa Zone Gurpreet Kangar said that the brothers were attacked as they prevented the Akalis from capturing booths in ward number 13, where they are acting as polling agents for the party.

“When we went to lodge a police complaint, the son of education minister Sikander Singh Maluka, Gurpreet Singh Maluka, also arrived at the police station and abused me and other Congress leaders and also pressed the police against the registration of a case,” he alleged.

“All this is happening on the directions of the education minister. He wants to demoralise Congress. We will take up the matter with the party high command and give an appropriate response,” he added.
