The district consumer disputes redressal forum has fined a wine vendor Rs. 10,000 for overcharging a customer Rs. 25 on the sale of a beer bottle.

Barjinder Pal had purchased one Haywards 5000 brand beer bottle from Gagan Wine Traders, recently. He was charged Rs. 100 though the printed price was Rs. 75 on the bottle.

The shopkeeper claimed that  Pal, having no bill as proof of purchase, might have bought it from any other vendor and that he only charged the printed price.  Pal, however, produced a video recording of the incident on CD.

Forum members saw the CD in an open session and in the absence of challenge to its genuineness, its authenticity was accepted.

In the CD, it was clear that the customer did demand a bill, which was not given.

Alleging that the vendor had indulged in an unfair trade practice, the consumer demanded a refund of the overcharged amount, along with the compensation and litigation expenses.
Forum president Sanjiv Dutt Sharma and member Karnail Singh Badbar ordered the contractor firm to pay compensation to the complainant along with refund of excess charged. The forum also directed the excise and taxation department to check such malpractices in the district.
