Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) on Wednesday further increased the discharge of water from the floodgates of the Bhakra dam.

The floodgates of the dam were lifted further to 5 feet to release more than 18,000 cusecs of water as against the 14,000 cusecs released on Tuesday. A total of 59,900 cusecs of water was released downstream in the Sutlej from the dam, including 41,000 cusecs through turbines. On Tuesday, the floodgates were opened up to four feet.

A total of 37,400 cusecs of water is being released downstream the Nangal dam into the Sutlej while the remaining 22,500 cusecs is being released into canals originating from the Nangal dam.

The water inflow in the dam on Wednesday afternoon was 84,000 cusecs and the water level was recorded at 1,665.31 feet.

Since the meteorological department has forecast heavy rain on August 14 in the catchment areas of the dam, the authorities may further increase the discharge in the coming days.

Meanwhile, Rupnagar additional deputy commissioner Karnesh Sharma visited the flood-affected villages of Anandpur Sahib and directed the authorities to supply fodder to the farmers as their crops were damaged.

The floodgates at the Bhakra dam are likely to be kept open for some more days.
