BCom student run over by mini truck, friend serious

A BCom com student was killed when the scooter she was pillion riding was hit by a mini truck near Gill village on Tuesday evening. In the incident, her friend, who was riding the scoter, suffered severe injuries and her condition is stated to be serious.

The deceased was identified as 22-year-old Megha, as student of Government College for Girls.

In his complaint, Megha's father Chetan Prakash of Postal Colony said his daughter had gone to Gurdwara Shri Manji Sahib, Alamgir, along with her classmate Mehak Sood. Chetan said he was following the girls on another scooter.

When they reached near Gill village, a speeding mini truck hit the scooter from behind following which both girls fell on the road. Megha was run over by the mini truck. Chetan immediately called the ambulance and rushed the girls to Civil Hospital, where Megha succumbed to her injuries.

However, the driver of the mini truck fled the spot leaving behind his vehicle.

Assistant sub-inspector Balbir Singh, in-charge of Marado police post, said the police arrested truck driver Kulwant Singh of Dangal village of Sangrur after lodging an FIR.

The police had registered a case under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) and 304-A (causing death due to negligence) against Kulwant.
