Gurkanwal Kaur, former Congress minister and daughter of late Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, has registered her protest with Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Partap Singh Bajwa over the formation of the new PPCC executive.
She said, "Taksali Congressmen have been left out to adjust rebels from the Shiromani Aklai Dal (SAD), Communist Party of India (CPI) and the People's Party of Punjab (PPP), which makes it appear an all-party members' list."
Gurkanwal was here to address the district Congress Mahila wing. She said the new executive had only nine women, which was against the party's norm of giving 33% reservation to women.
"It is rather unfortunate that women are not getting their due status in the Congress as far as Punjab is concerned. This has to change," she added.
Gurkanwal stated that she would take a delegation of Congress members to meet party president Sonia Gandhi to put forward a request for reconsidering and reconstituting the executive committee.
When asked whether she would join Malkeet Singh Heera's hunger strike (in protest against the PPCC list), scheduled for January 10 in front of Punjab Congress Bhawan, Gurkanwal said she would be present on the occasion to extend support to the Congress leader.
