'Bebe di rasoi' steals the show at expo

On all the four days of Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan, an expo held on the premises of Lovely Professional University here, 'Bebe di rasoi' remained the centre of attraction among the visitors, who enjoyed traditional, healthy and nutritious cuisines of the Punjab.
The food stall offered 'ladoos' of jowar, bajra, makka, 'makki di roti, sarson ka saag and kheer-maalpoore, prepared by the rural women. "We not only sold food here, but also tried to make visitors aware of the nutrition value of these traditional foods," said Umendra Dutt, executive director of Kheti Virast Mission (KVM), the brainchild behind the concept.
Rajni Menon, a student, who tired the food on Day 4 of the expo, said it was a taste worth remembering. "I never thought that ordinary-looking 'sarson ka saag' could be so delicious. Its taste was so different," she said.
"We are promoting organic-based and natural farming techniques to save the next generation from the dreaded diseases being spread by these genetically modified crops. Excessive use of pesticides and fertilisers add to the vows farmers as well as consumers," Dutt said.
"We promote sustainable and ecological farming practices as well as the conservation and regeneration of natural water resources," he further said, adding that such occasions were the best to spread their vision and mission.
"Here too, we disseminated information on three different issues. In the first stall, we exhibited the Bhopal gas tragedy from the lenses of renowned photographer Raghu Rai; at second stall, we exhibited environment and health-related problems and solutions and at the third, we exhibited the advantages of organic farming," Dutt said.
"We discussed the issues with visitors and students and organic farmers from across the state shared their success stories and experiences," he said.
