For overcharging customers for beer, the excise and taxation department has fixed 18 liquor contractors.
It laid a total fine of Rs 13.70 lakh on the defaulter in this district. The Punjab government has prescribed a fixed price for beer. Cases under Section 61-A (unlawful import, export, transport, manufacture, possession, and sale) of the Excise Act of 1914 were registered.
A few days ago, some local organisations complained to the administration about beer being sold over the maximum rate in Moga and other places in the district."In raids, the department found the beer selling for Rs 90 to Rs 120 a bottle instead of between Rs 70 and 75 for light and strong varieties," deputy commissioner Arshdeep Singh Thind said on Wednesday. "Some vendors who fleeced customers even had the official rate list displayed at their shops.""If the liquor contractors continue to defy the government rules," said the DC, "the penalty will be harsher."
