Former chief minister and senior Congress leader Rajinder Kaur Bhattal on Monday lashed out at the Parkash Singh Badal government in the state for failing to evolve a proper mechanism to lift wheat from the grain markets, following which the farmers are facing a lot of harassment.
She said that the situation has turned from bad to worse in regard to lifting of wheat in view of the reports from certain areas of the state, including Patiala, that farmers were sent home by the officials of procuring agencies ensuring them that their crop will be lifted later.
Bhattal said that small farmers are being hit badly as wheat is still lying in the open and the prediction of rain in the near future is worrying them.
As far as compensation to farmers is concerned, the Badal government has so far not carried out even an assessment of the losses of farmers in the state, added Bhattal.
She said that the Alkalis, who claim to be an important part of the NDA government at the Centre, have failed to impress Prime Minister Narendra Modi for resolving the various problems confronted by farmers in the country including Punjab. She said that the Modi government, after taking over reins of the country last year, has been ignoring Punjab due to which the development of the state has been hampered to a significant extent.
