The auction of the municipal corporation building in Bhawanigarh was postponed after Congress party workers on Monday staged a protest against the state government's decision in this regard.
Member of parliament (MP) Vijay Inder Singla and former member of legislative assembly (MLA) Surinder Pal Sibia led the protesters.
Addressing the gathering, Singla lashed out at the SAD-BJP government and accused it of following an 'anti-people policy', which they said was responsible for the poor financial condition of the state.
Alleging that the state government has taxed the urban areas by introducing e-Trip and that everybody has to pay extra electricity expenses hidden as miscellaneous expenses, he said, "The SAD-BJP government has betrayed the people of Punjab by not implementing even one of the promises it made during the last elections in the manifesto."
The state was in a financial emergency, as members of the government had not paid their own fuel expense bills; no salaries were paid to state government employees; and VAT refunds could not be made to the industries.
"More protests will be organised if the state government decides to auction the building again," Sibia added.
