The blockade of all the entrances to Kotra Kaura village near here by the villagers, mainly members of the Bhullar community, led to the cancellation of the scheduled visit to the village of sitting Bathinda MP and SAD candidate for the Lok Sabha constituency Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Saturday.
The community is waging a legal battle with the SGPC over the possession of Gurdwara Mari Sikhan Wala on the Rampuraphul-Mehraj road.
The SGPC had tried to take possession of the gurdwara in 2010. Several meetings of the community have been held to resolve the issue in the past.
President of the Bhullar Bhaichara committee Surjit Singh Bhullar said that despite assurances by the state government and Maur MLA and irrigation minister Janmeja Singh Sekhon, the government has failed to amicably resolve the issue.
Members of the community had blocked all the six entrance points of the village by parking tractor-trolleys and putting up big tree logs to prevent Harsimrat Kaur along with other SAD leaders from entering the village to address an election meeting.
Residents had announced on Friday night about the planned blockade of the village and had asked the people to enter or leave the village before 11 am.
A huge police force was deployed in the village to check the law and order situation. The villagers didn’t even allow the entry of police vehicles.
Members of the community have been showing black flags to Harsimrat at several villages under the constituency. On Saturday she was also greeted with black flags in villages of Balianwali and Mandi Kalan.
SAD sarpanch of village Gurpal Singh Bhullar said that he had urged the MP to cancel the visit to village, following which residents agreed to lift the blockade.
