Two people were arrested on Tuesday on a charge of shooting at a government teacher near Raunta village in this district on February 27. The police claim to have seized a revolver used in the crime from suspects Tota Singh and Birbal Singh Gandhi of Pakharwadh village in Moga district.

"The suspects told us they had acted on the directions of the expatriate husband of the target," senior superintendent of police Surjit Singh Grewal told the media. "Settled in Canada and married to Harpreet Kaur of Bharthala Mander village in Sangrur district, Gurjit Singh of Raunta had got into an extra-marital affair and married again without divorcing his first wife." Gurjit Singh had hired the two men for killing Harpreet Kaur, said the SSP.

"Tota Singh, mediator between the contract killers and Gurjit Singh, has accepted that Birbal Singh and Jaswinder Singh of Bhagta Bhai village of Bathinda district attacked the teacher for killing her at the behest of Gurjit Singh," he added. A hunt for Jaswinder Singh is on.
