Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Kamal Sharma on Tuesday minced no words in condemning Congress leader Shashi Tharoor for comparing Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh with Jawahar Lal Nehru (JNU) Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar. The BJP held a protest against Congress for insulting the martyr.
Sharma, who was in city to launch the party’s Tiranga Yatra, said March 23 was the martyrdom day of Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, who made a supreme sacrifice in fighting for India’s freedom. “Unfortunately, the tribute given by Tharoor and Congress to these martyrs by comparing Kanhaiya with the legendary Bhagat Singh is ridiculous and a shameful act. This is sheer insult to the great martyr that has hurt people nationwide,” asserted the BJP chief.
Addressing the gathering of party leaders and workers at Jyoti Chowk, the BJP chief said Kanhaiya was yet to come clean on slogans such as “Bharat ki barbadi tak jung rahegi” in JNU. The comparison with Shaheed Bhagat Singh had left the entire country outraged, he added.
Lambasting the Congress for standing with anti-national people, Sharma pointed out that earlier, All India Congress Committee (AICC) vice-president Rahul Gandhi had gone to JNU, extending whole-hearted support to and solidarity with Kanhaiya, who was arrested on sedition charges and was out on bail.
Sharma said Kanhaiya met Rahul at his official residence on Tuesday, which had put a rubber stamp on the fact that Congress was working against national interests. “Now, it is amply clear that Tharoor had gone to JNU as a messenger of Congress vice-president. No wonder, Tharoor equated Rahul with Mahatma Gandhi,” he said.
The BJP has demanded that the Congress must come out with a categorical statement as to whether it subscribes to what Tharoor said or not. “Rahul Gandhi, Tharoor and Congress owe an apology to the whole country,” he said.
Shanta kumar expresses shock
DHARAMSHALA: Former Union minister and Kangra member of Parliament (MP) Shanta Kumar, on Tuesday, expressed shock over the statement by Congress leader Shashi
Tharoor likening Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar, who is facing sedition charges, with Bhagat Singh.
During a speech at JNU campus on Sunday evening, Tharoor said that Bhagat Singh was a young man in his 20s with Marxist beliefs having great passion for the motherland and Kanhaiya had the same qualities.
“It is unfortunate and disgrace to martyr Bhagat Singh, who sacrificed his life for the nation,” said Shanta, adding, “Tharoor is a friend of mine, but I am shocked by such a statement from a person of his intellect.”
How can he (Tharoor), Shanta said, compare a person, who is facing sedition charges for anti-national activity on the JNU campus with martyr Bhagat Singh? Shanta said that Tharoor should apologise to the nation for bringing disgrace to a martyr.
