With the Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (SAD-BJP) combine having majority with the help of Independents in the newly formed Phagwara municipal corporation (MC), the elections to which were held last month, the saffron party’s Arun Khosla has emerged as the frontrunner for the mayoral post.

The name of Vipan Kumar Sood, winner from ward 14, is also doing rounds for the top post. Khosla, and a close aide of MLA Som Parkash, has won from ward 18 of the city.

The swearing-in ceremony for the mayor, senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor will be held at 11am on the MC premises on Wednesday.

Sources said the posts of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor could land in SAD’s kitty.

A meeting of the BJP’s core meeting headed by party’s national secretary-cum-district in-charge Tarun Chugh, Punjab industries and commerce minister Madan Mohan Mittal, BJP state secretary Ravi Mahenderu, BJP district president Parshotam Passi and all councillors, was held at the residence of MLA Som Parkash on Tuesday.

The meeting was held to create consensus on as who will get the mayor’s post. “But since majority of councillors are supporting Arun Khosla, he could be the first mayor of Phagwara corporation,” a party leader said.
