Despite the ongoing tussle between local leaders of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Naresh Mahajan is all set to swear in as president of the Batala municipal council on Monday. Punjab BJP president Kamal Sharma and general secretary Rakesh Rathore are expected to grace the occasion.

SAD leaders had already filed a writ petition in the Punjab and Haryana high court, claiming that “district administration officials were hand in glove the BJP and Congress MLA Ashwani Sekhri in the Batala MC president election”.

Batala halqa in-charge and SAD leader Lakhbir Singh Lodhinangal claimed that he had urged Gurdaspur DC Abhinav Trikha to replace the convener (returning officer-cum-sub divisional magistrate) JS Grewal, because of Grewal’s “proximity” with a SAD leader, “opposed” to Lodhinangal.
