BJP workers staged a protest in the Udaipur block in Lahaul-Spiti on Monday against lack of air services to the district, demanding the state government should resume regular flights from various helipads to transport stranded patients, students, employees and others to other areas.
On Monday around more than 50 area residents gathered under the leadership of district BJP unit chief Surat Ram and voiced their demands, which were later sent in a memorandum to the governor through the local subdivisional magistrate.
"Due to irregular flight services in the district, patients, students and employees are facing difficulties to move out of the district because due to the closure of the Manali-Leh highway via the Rohtang pass, there is no alternative except air services to move out of the district," Ram said.
According to him, villagers living near Udaipur, Tindi, Tingrat, Barring, Chokhang and Rava helipads were desperate for helicopter sorties, where people are waiting for a long time for flight services.
Every year the state government resumes air services in the region for the comfort of the tribal residents soon after the closure of the Rohtang pass, but this year the prolonged bad weather hampered regular flights to the district, resulting in locals facing difficulties in travelling outside the region.
