Authorities resumed an operation for the second day on Tuesday to fish out the bodies of four youths who drowned in Beas river at Kishanpur Pattan under Bhaini Mian Khan police station in Gurdaspur district while talking a bath but did not meet success.

The rescue operation was resumed at about 5.30am on Tuesday. Earlier, the operation was launched on Monday afternoon which continued till late evening.

All four victims, namely Ajay Masih, Robert Masih, Emanuel Masih and Lovepreet Masih, all aged about 17-18 years, were from poor Christian families of nearby Jagowal Bet village. Three of them belonged to families of labourers while one was a son of an ex-serviceman.

Two of the drowned victims were Class XII students while the other two were their friends.
Deputy commissioner Abhinav Trikha and SSP Ravcharan Singh Brar accompanied by other senior district officers visited the spot where a seven-member BSF divers team from Madhopur had searched in and around the spot where the youths were suspected to have drowned.

Water inflow into the river from sluices upstream of the spot was stopped to help divers search for the missing youths.

The DC said that professional divers from Ropar had been summoned to locate the bodies.

Gurdaspur (Rural) DSP Gurmej Singh told Hindustan Times that eight boys of Jagowal Bet village had gone for swimming in the river. While four swam back to safety the other four inadvertently entered deep waters. They were swept away by strong currents.

Some villagers did try to rescue the four by jumping into the river, but to no avail.
