In what the police suspect is a case of infanticide, the body of a newborn girl was recovered from a garbage dump near the EWS Colony on Chandigarh Road on Friday evening.

Varinder Kumar, a tea vendor was the first to spot the infant's body, following which the police were alerted.

ASI Sukhwinder Singh, who is investigating the case, said the police have also not ruled out the possibility that an unmarried girl left the newborn in the dump to die to "avoid the society's questions."

The infant's body has been sent to the civil hospital for postmortem. A case has been registered under section 318 (concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body) of the Indian Penal Code.

The police have begun enquiring at local hospitals, nursing homes and midwives to find how many women delivered babies over the past few days.
