The city police has arrested a man who was preparing bogus health supplements in Ludhiana on Tuesday.
A team of health department officials raided a house in Raghubeer Park Chandar Nagar and found locally made steroids and fake supplements.
The authorities concerned alerted the police who arrested owner of the business Vikas Sachdeva.
District Food Safety Officer Ravindra Garg said along with a huge quantity of fake supplements, the health department team found intrernational labels and empty boxes.
”The accused used to purchase fake supplements from Delhi and sell these under international labels,” said Garg.
The team of district food safety officers that conducted a raid included Ravinder Garg, Manoj Khosla, Yogesh Goyal and Harpreet Kaur.
The team found around 250 boxes of fake supplements apart from 3.5 sacks of starch, 2.5 sacks of milk powder, one sack of custard, one box of vanilla flavour and one box of chocolate flavour.
Two empty boxes of cyproheptadine salt were also found. The salt is used to increase the appetite. Four empty boxes of dexamethasone, steroid, were also found.
Garg said when the accused was grilled he said he used to bring the products from Delhi and then pack these products in empty cases of international brands and sell it.
The fake supplements were sold in the local market at different prices with different labels.
Three samples were collected from the spot will be sent to the food testing laboratory in Chandigarh.
The DFSO said steroids and food supplements can pose a serious risk to health.
The accused has been booked under sections 272, 273 and 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The case has been registered at police station division no 4.
