Booked under charges of sedition along with 19 others, Giani Dhian Singh Mand was sent to police custody for a day.

Mand, who was ‘announced’ as interim jathedar of the Akal Takht during the November 10 Sarbat Khalsa, was produced in the court by Amritsar (rural) police. The case was registered against him at the Chattiwind police station.

Since Punjab Police started a crackdown, Mand was booked along with other Panthic leaders after the radical Sarbat Khalsa. Though most of them were arrested within hours of the radical congregation, Mand was nabbed only after he addressed the community on the evening of Diwali.

Mand, during his address, had asked the community to boycott the Badals. As soon as he left the Golden Temple on Diwali evening, he was nabbed.

Since the police have already booked two people by name and other unidentified people in the case registered at E Division police station after the SGPC gave a complaint regarding the ruckus inside the shrine on Diwali, it is likely that Mand gets named in that FIR.

Meanwhile, as Mand was to be produced in the court, the cops ensured that the media did not get close to him. The cops of both Amritsar police commissionerate and Amritsar (rural) police were present.
