The driver of a private bus allegedly crushed a boy to death at Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar Inter-State Bus Terminal on Wednesday morning and fled soon after the incident.
The incident took place when the boy, who was a rag picker, was picking up empty bottles and other things from the bus terminal.
The deceased has been identified as Shekh Ali Khan, 12, of West Bengal. He lived in slums near the bus terminal.
According to eyewitness Pramod Kumar, he was waiting for a bus to Chandigarh.
A group of boys was busy in picking up rags and empty bottles.
Meanwhile, a reversing bus crushed the boy to death at counter no. 23. Passengers asked the driver to apply the brakes and rushed to rescue the boy, but to no avail, as the boy died on the spot.
The driver of the bus fled from the scene soon after the incident, but left his vehicle behind.
According to sub-inspector Rajesh Thakur, in charge, police post, bus stand, the parents of the victim have not recorded any statement with the police. The police would register a case after recording the statement of parents of the victim.
