Demanding action against certain persons of upper castes, who have allegedly boycotted the Dalits in Baupur village of Moonak sub-division of the district, thousands of Dalits on Saturday held a protest march outside the deputy commissioner's office.

Led by several unions like the Boycott Action Virodhi Committee, the Zameen Prapti Sanghrsh Committee, the Mazdoor Union, the Mazdoor Adhikar Andolan and the Mazdoor Mukti Morcha, members gathered outside the deputy commissioner's office and held a protest march in the city.

They also handed over a memorandum to the tehsildar, who assured them of a meeting with the deputy commissioner on Monday.

Dalits of Baupur village had alleged that members of the upper caste do not allow Dalits to enter their fields and have cut the water supply to the 105 members of the Ramdasia and Valmiki communities.

The Dalits also alleged that some influential people of the upper castes did not allow the bidding of 27 acres of panchayati agriculture land reserved for the lower castes. The Dalits are also demanding that the land should be given to the Dalits for agriculture at the cheaper rates.

A member of the Punjab Scheduled Castes Commission Dalip Singh Panthi had also visited Baupur village on Thursday in connection with the issue and assured them to provide justice.
