In what could be seen as a brazen display of political clout, police constable Gurwake Singh, who is the grandson of Shiromani Akali Dal member of legislative assembly (SAD-MLA) Chatin Singh Samao, got into a verbal duel with a superintendent of police (SP) rank officer in Mansa, during a programme of Union food processing minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
According to eye witnesses, Gurwake Singh was stopped from parking his vehicle in an area arranged for Harsimrat’s car. Later when SP Rakesh Kumar intervened, the constable got into a heated exchange with Kumar, and allegedly got into a scuffle with the gunman of the SP.
His father, Malkeet Samao, member of zila parishad, too supported him in criticising the SP.
When contacted, acting senior superintendent of police (SSP) Gurpreet Singh Toor said that it was a minor incident and the police acted diligently. “Our police force performed its duty and they will be rewarded for the same.”
However he said that any action against the constable will only be taken after proper enquiry into the matter.
Samao, A liability for SAD?
This is not an isolated incident where SAD MLA from Budhlada, Chatin Singh Samao and his supporters have taken law in their hands without being taken to task by the party high command.
On Saturday, Samao and his supporters evicted a rival SAD leader, Bittu Chaudhary, from the programme of Harismrat Kaur Badal.
In 2014, one of his supporters allegedly got an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) suspended after the latter didn’t offer his chair to him in the city police station at Budhlada.
Samao had been at loggerheads with ex- SAD MLA Harwant Singh Datewas and the in-fighting came to the fore when the Datewas camp held a protest meeting against Samao during Harsimrat’s visit in Budhlada.
“He and his coterie of few supporters have spoilt the entire constituency by inducting anti-social elements in the party,” said said former MLA Harwant Singh Datewas.
We have held several meetings to highlight his incompetence but the party high command has not taken any action against him,” said Datewas.
Last year too, Samao and Datewas locked horns over the choice of candidates for the municipal elections and Samao had the last laugh when his protégé was elected as the president of the Budhlada municipal council.
Old timers within the party said that due to Samao’s seniority and reserved category status, the party doesn’t want to upset the MLA.
“He is eyeing for the party ticket in the upcoming assembly elections, but the party is not interested. The party just want to tolerate his misbehaviour till the election dates are announced,” said the sources in party.
MLA Chatin Singh Samao and his family members could not be contacted for their comments, despite repeated attempts.
Gurwake Singh was stopped from parking his vehicle in an area earmarked for Harsimrat’s car.
When SP Rakesh Kumar intervened, the constable got into a heated argument with Kumar, and allegedly also got into a scuffle with the SP’s gunman.
