Several fields were inundated after a breach occurred in the 6-R-Canal near Saide Shah Wala village under Dharamkot subdivision in the district on Sunday.
The breach occurred in the wee hours of Sunday, but farmers came to know about it later in the day and the villagers were informed through the loudspeaker at the village gurdwara. They also informed the canal department officials, following which the repair work started on the canal.
Progressive farmer Bhoar Singh of Saide Shah Wala village said villagers rushed to the spot after an announcement about the breach was made. “More than 150 acres of land were inundated and crops, including newly-transplanted paddy, cotton and moong, were destroyed.”
“Maximum damage has been caused to paddy and fodder crops. All hard work has gone waste. Now, we will have to transplant paddy again which has been washed off,” said Bhupinder Singh, a farmer of the village.
