BSF personnel to be 'at home' on Karva Chauth

At the BSF staff headquarters in Khasa, personnel are listing themselves for the Karva Chauth duty, which is to the spouse and not country for a change.

Under its Apna Ghar Sarhad Par (My house on the border) progamme, Border Security Force has installed computers for video chat with wives and husbands on the festival night, as that will help the dutiful ladies end their daylong fast.

Sensing that there would be many volunteers for this task on the fence, the BSF headquarters have asked the battalion heads in Amritsar sector to send names. "The idea was to keep the force connected with family," BSF deputy inspector general MF Farooqui said here on the festival even on Monday. "Karva Chauth is the big night when we increase our effort to make jawans and women constables feel at home."

Since the fast ends at a specific time, the BSF will deploy more computers to accommodate everyone who has listed. The arrangements have been made at the integrated check post (ICP), joint check post at Attari, and the BSF headquarters in Khasa. A few battalions have own computers, which they will make available to jawans for specific time.

It also helps the BSF. "At the time of festivals, many personnel apply for break but because of the nature of our duty, it is impossible to accommodate all. If they can't go home on Karva Chauth, we bring the home to them," said the DIG.

Net gain for jawans
The border outposts (BOPs) where the BSF jawans are on surveillance duty will go hi-tech. Each will have a computer and Internet facility of own.

The force is going to tie up with a telecom company. "The BOPs will have wireless Internet service, starting with 16," said DIG MF Farooqui. It will not only help the jawans video chat with families from the post but also improve the inter-post communication through email.
