The Border Security Force (BSF) have recovered 13kg heroin along with arms and ammunition after a brief encounter with Pakistani smugglers along the Indo-Pak border in the Khemkaran sector.

Besides the heroin, the BSF recovered a pistol, two magazines, two grenades and 50 cartridges.

Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, BSF IG Ajay Kumar Tomar said, "In the early hours of Thursday in the area of Rattoke Border Outpost, the BSF troops noticed a suspicious movement in the paddy fields ahead of the fence. The BSF troops challenged the smugglers who fired at the BSF jawans."

Reacting to this, the BSF jawans also opened fire. The smugglers managed to flee from the spot. The troops spotted a plastic pipe filled with the contraband and the arms.

Giving details, Tomar said, "Keeping in view the vulnerability of the border from the smuggling point of view, operational guidelines were issued to further strengthen border domination so as to effectively check the menace of narcotics smuggling on the Punjab border with Pakistan."

The BSF IG said the focus was on strengthening the vigil and the regular seizures showed that efforts were successful in foiling the smuggling bids.
