In a major breakthrough, the Border Security Force (BSF) seized 14 kg heroin and also reportedly shot dead a Pakistani smuggler in cross-firing in the Amritsar sector of the Indo-Pak border.

According to BSF DIG MF Farooqui, a Pakistani smuggler was shot dead by the BSF jawans and another was injured. The body of the Pakistani smuggler was dragged back into the Pakistani territory by his accomplice.

The incident took place under the area of Border Out Post (BOP) Udhar Dhariwal of the Amritsar sector.
Talking to HT, Farooqui said, "There was a tip-off that smugglers from across the border may sneak in drugs from the area and a vigil was on."

He said the BSF jawans posted at the BOP had laid a special ambush. At about 8.40pm on Sunday, the BSF jawans spotted a movement of three Pakistani smugglers with a plastic pipe near the border, he added.

Later, two of them started moving towards the BSF fence. At around 9.15pm, the two tried to push a plastic pipe filled with drugs into the fence. As the BSF troops challenged them the smugglers opened fire. The BSF also returned the fire.

The BSF DIG said that thus challenged, the Pakistani smugglers started running back towards the Pakistani territory.

He claimed that one of them was shot dead and the two others were injured. "We saw the dead body that was later dragged back by an accomplice of the deceased," claimed the DIG.

The BSF later launched a search operation and found a plastic pipe and 14 packets of heroin.
The BSF lodged a protest with the Pakistani Rangers, who denied that any such incident took place.
