BSF jawans of 48 battalion seized 17kg heroin, worth Rs 85 crore in the international market, after an exchange of firing between security personnel and Pakistani smugglers at Sadhanwali check post in Dera Baba Nanak sector in Gurdaspur district on the Indo-Pak border on Saturday.
BSF jawans deployed at Sadhanwali check post saw two Pakistani smugglers crossing over to India at about 1.40am on Saturday. When the jawans challenged them, they started firing at the BSF men, but ran back into Pakistan territory after security men returned fire, Gurdaspur BSF officiating DIG Gurpal Singh told a press conference at Dera Baba Nanak.
He said that there were four Pakistani smugglers in all, adding that after they managed to escape under the cover of darkness, BSF jawans seized 17 packets of heroin weighing one kg each hidden in a 10-foot plastic pipe.
The DIG said that the BSF jawans also seized ammunition of a pistol, four live cartridges and around 100 spent cartridges from the site.
