Border Security Force (BSF) personnel shot dead a Pakistani smuggler and recovered 9-kg heroin valued at Rs 45 crore at the border outpost Jagdish, here on Tuesday night.
BSF Punjab Frontier IG Ajay Kumar Tomar said that two people were found to be infiltrating across the border from Pakistan.
When challenged, they fired at his men and in retaliatory fire, one of them was killed and the other managed to flee back into Pakistani territory. He added that two pistols were recovered along with 15 rounds of magazines, a plastic pipe and three mobile phones.
On Wednesday, a search operation was launched and the body of the smuggler was recovered.
"BSF director general Subhash Joshi appreciated the team which made the seizure and it would be awarded a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh," added Tomar.
A flag-meet would be organised with Pakistan and if it refused to accept the body, the last rites would be performed here.
"We are seeking cooperation from the state police to keep an eye on anti-social elements who indulged in trafficking. The IB and the Narcotics Control Bureau was also being kept in the loop," he added.
This year, five Pak drug smugglers have been shot dead so far. More than 305-kg heroin (the highest-ever in a year) and Rs 52 lakh in fake Indian currency notes have been recovered so far.
