Gone are the days when telecom services in Hamirpur were considered to be one of the best not only in the state but also in the entire northern region. Now it is regarded as one of the worst.
Despite providing many concessions to subscribers, broadband services provided by the state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd's in the district are now far from satisfactory, with users complaining of frequent disruptions of the network. So much so that many phone data consumers now subscribe to another operator's services as they are not sure whether their BSNL connections will work.
Locals say whenever required broadband services don't work and if they do at all then the speeds are too low to get work done. The worst affected are students and journalists who need the internet almost round the clock.
When contacted a BSNL spokesman told this reporter that frequent rainfall coupled with digging of roads for laying underground cables was the primary cause of failure of broadband services in the region.
"The department is aware of the issue and broadband services will be normal in the coming week," he added.
However, insiders in BSNL said lack of lower rung field staff like mechanics and paucity of the latest instruments for repair work was the key reason for the poor broadband and phone services in the area.
According to sources, the department had not yet received stocks of many essential items from Delhi, leading to frequent failure of services not only in Hamirpur but also in other parts of the state.
Once a complaint regarding a fault is lodged it takes days to rectify it due to the acute shortage of field staff.
Hamirpur MP Anurag Thakur said he would take up the issue with the minister concerned to ensure residents did not face any problem in getting uninterrupted telecom services.
