The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Friday arrested a general manager posted at BSNL's Karnal unit for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 2 lakh for favouring an employee in a departmental inquiry being conducted against him. The accused was sent to one-day CBI remand on Saturday.
A CBI spokesperson said a case was registered under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, against Chander Haas, general manager (telecom), Karnal on the allegations of demanding bribe of `three lakh from the complainant, who was serving as a junior training officer (JTO) in BSNL at Karnal.
The general manager is a 1981-batch officer of Indian Telecom Services.
CBI laid a trap and the accused was caught red-handed while demanding and accepting bribe of `two lakh from the complainant on Friday. Meanwhile, the CBI officials said they would be questioning the general manager for they suspect there might be other related cases.
The official said searches were carried out at the official residence of the accused at Karnal and at his house in New Delhi. Cash to the tune of about Rs 6.50 lakh, gold jewellery and documents related to property and other investments were recovered from his residence, the official added.
