A special CBI Court on Friday awarded one day police remand to Rajesh Bansal, general manager of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and contractor Shahi, who were arrested in a bribery case on Thursday evening.

The accused were produced in a special CBI court presided by additional district session judge Kawaljit Singh, who accepted the application of CBI for custodial interrogation of the accused.

The CBI wants to grill the BSNL official to know about other misdeeds and misappropriations he has committed while he held the post of GM, BNSL inh Patiala.

The CBI on Thursday had arrested the accused red-handed while taking a bribe from a contractor.

As per information, a Chandigarh based contractor on Wednesday approached the CBI with a complaint alleging that a BSNL contractor was demanding Rs 3 lakhs for settling the dispute of damages caused on the optical fibre cables (OFC) of BSNL, Patiala.

The complainant was laying the OFC for the Idea cellular company and during this he had cut the BSNL cable at some places.

Accordingly, BSNL, Patiala had raised demand notes for such damages of its OFC at a rate of Rs.1.50 lakhs per cut for eight such cuts.

The contractor called the complainant and assured him that he would get the matter settled if the alleged bribe was paid to the BSNL officer through him.

Following this complaint, the investigating agency laid a trap wherein the contractor was caught while demanding and accepting bribe of Rs1 lakh from the complainant on behalf of the general manager.

Later the GM was also arrested, as the CBI was keeping a close tab on him to know about his relationship with the contractor.
