A 70-year-old man was killed as a building got collapsed at Thapran Mohalla near Daresi Ground on Friday.
Assistant sub inspector (ASI) at Daresi police station Des Raj said the victim, Gurcharan Singh, was going towards his home when a portion of three-storey building got collapsed and he was crushed under it on Friday afternoon. The victim was taken to the Christian Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) where he was declared dead.
The ASI said required action will be taken after recording the statement of the victim’s family.
Residents had complained about the building many times but the authorities concerned failed to take any action.
Arun Thapar, a resident of Daresi area, said the area residents had complained many times to the municipal corporation (MC) that had also issued orders to demolish the building. However, some people residing at the building had been opposing the demolition.
He said if the MC had taken required steps in time, the life of Gurcharan Singh could have been saved.
HT has also highlighted the menace of unsafe buildings in the city but the MC has failed to keep a check on these buildings, mostly in old city areas.
Sources said there are around 65 buildings under Zone A of the MC which have been declared unsafe by the department. Of them, the cases related to 25 buildings are sub-judice but it has failed to ensure required action against the remaining buildings.
Meanwhile, assistant town planner Pardeep Sehgal was not available for comment.
