A prison bus with 24 inmates and 19 police personnel on board met with an accident on Kartarpur road near Kapurthala on Saturday, leaving six cops, including the bus driver and one inmate, injured. The bus was ferrying the prisoners to the local court.
Receiving information about the accident, a team led by Kapurthala deputy superintendent of police (DSP headquarters) Rupinder Kaur Bhatti rushed to the spot and shifted the inmates to another vehicle for the court hearing.
A witness said the accident occurred after bus driver Balkar Singh tried to overtake a mini-truck on the road and collided with a speeding tipper coming from the Kartarpur side. Two other vehicles behind the bus also got badly damaged in the mishap but no causality was reported.
Though the driver of the bus claimed that the accident occurred due to failure of brakes, police officials denied it.
The DSP said that no causality was reported and the injured were admitted to the civil hospital for treatment. Later, the inmates were sent to court in another vehicle.
She said as per the preliminary reports, it was found that the bus driver was not at fault. A case would be registered on the basis of the statements of the driver and witnesses, she added.
Head constables Surinder Kaur, Darshan, Manjeet Kaur, Pawandeep Kaur, Mahinderpartap, bus driver Balkar Singh and inmate Sarabjit Singh got minor injuries and were shifted to the civil hospital.
