Bus conductor's body found; toll rises to 15

The police on Sunday recovered the body of Batala resident Raman Kumar, the conductor of the Punjab Roadways bus which had plunged into the Bhakra canal at Sirhind on July 31. The body of an unidentified woman was also found, taking the total number of bodies recovered so far to 15.

As per reports, nine of these bodies have been identified so far. Besides Raman, the bodies identified are those of bus driver Surinder Singh, Dr Brijesh Kumar, Neeraj Kumar, Ram Narayan, Jatin Bharti, Suresh Singh and Ashok Kumar.

Senior police officials said efforts were being made to locate other bodies. Sirhind station house officer (SHO) SS Virk confirmed that two bodies had been found on Sunday.

The New Delhi-Amritsar bus had skidded off an overbridge and plunged into the canal here in the wee hours of July 31. The accident had taken place near the Sirhind floating restaurant on National Highway No 1. The spot is located about 50 km from Chandigarh and nearly 35 km from Patiala.
