Condemning the state government for the imposition of property tax in an arbitrary manner, several representations of different business associations met chief parliamentary secretary KD Bhandari to lodge their protest against the government's decision. The members have formed a Mahanagar Sangharsh Committee, constituted to launch a campaign against the tax.

Committee president Ravinder Dhir said that the business community was in distress due to the anti-industrialist policy of the state government and simply could not afford to pay another tax.

"There is no rationale for the imposition of property tax on the urban community in an arbitrary manner?" Dhir said. He added that if the decision was not taken back, businessmen would be forced to launch a campaign and threatened that parliamentary elections could prove to be a disaster for the regime.

President of the Federation of Jalandhar Industrialists and traders associations, Gursharan Singh said that the government was, in a sense, burdening the urban population to extend more freebies to the rural population.

"Why is the BJP, a part of the ruling alliance, which claims to be champion of protecting the rights of urban population silent on the issue," Singh said.

A number of protests have already rocked the city and markets are being opened on alternate days as a mark of protest.

Other prominent associations in the delgation that met the minister included District Vyapar Mander, Khel Udyog Sangh, Sports Forum, Vyapar Sena, Punjab & Wholesale Chemist Association.
