Car driver runs over woman, child in Ludhiana

A car driver ran over a woman and her one-year-old son near Ramgarh village on Chandigarh Road here on Thursday night.

The deceased have been identified as 26-year-old Sunita and her son Bittu.

Three more people -- her husband, another son and brother-in-law - were injured. They were rushed to the local civil hospital and discharged after being given treatment.

The Skoda car stopped after hitting a milestone. The driver fled from the scene leaving the car behind. Sahnewal Police have registered a case of causing death due to negligence against the accused, who has been identified as Ankit Kumar of Kangra in Himachal Pradesh. The police have launched a manhunt to arrest him.

Talking about the incident, Sunita's husband Vinod Kumar, a labourer, said he, along with his wife, sons Om Prakash (8) and Bittu and brother Babu Lal, was sleeping outside their shanty, when all of a sudden, a car came over the pavement and hit the family. The two died on the spot whereas the injured cried for help. Passesby informed the police and ambulance.

ASI Roop Lal, who is investigating the case, said the police reached the spot immediately and identified the accused from the documents recovered from the car.
