Four members of a family from Kauni village in Muktsar have been reportedly killed after their car (a Maruti Zen) skidded into the Rajasthan Canal, near Bhullar village on the Bathinda-Muktsar road, on Friday afternoon.
The victims have been identified as Gurbhej Singh, 27, who was driving the car, his wife Gagandeep Kaur, 25, mother Binder Kaur and five-year-old son, Manraj Singh.
The car reportedly went out of control after ramming into a pit on the road and landed into the water.
Passersby could not launch rescue efforts as the canal has a lot of water this season.
Residents of nearby villages have claimed that the administration failed to respond in time and till the filing of this report, the car had not been retrieved from the waters.
"Four people are feared to have been killed. We had deployed a crane and divers to find the car, but could not find the vehicle due to the volume of water in the canal. We have called a team from the National Disaster Management Authority in Bathinda to help us," said Muktsar SSP Surjeet Singh.
