In a major setback to students wanting to upgrade their E1 and E2 grades, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) from this academic session would provide only one chance for the improvement of performance for Class-10 students.
Earlier students were provided three chances, but this year, the board has decided to give only one chance.
It is worth mentioning that the CBSE has discontinued with the practice of declaring compartment or failing students after induction of the grading system. Now students scoring E1 or E2 grades in any subject would get the improvement chance.
The decrease in chances may seem disappointing to many, but the experts feel it a right decision. Principal of Guru Nanak Public School, Sarabha Nagar, Mona Singh, said, “This is a better decision and would help students.”
She added students would be able to give the exam in July. Those who would pass the paper would be eligible for Class 11 that would not hamper their studies. If one fails to pass the paper, he/she will repeat the class.
Earlier students who were not able to clear the exam in the first attempt, they used to wait for the second and even third chance. By the time these students used to attempt the second and third chance, half of the syllabus of Class 10 as well as Class 11 was covered.
Singh added that it's better to improve the basics before going for higher classes. “If students will be well prepared, one chance is sufficient,” said Mona.
The board has decided that the improvement of performance chance could be availed by students who would be able to obtain E1 or E2 grades in one or all the five subjects, excluding the sixth additional subject.
Students appearing for improvement of performance exam would have to register themselves as per the schedule given on the CBSE website. The registered students could improve their grades through the exams conducted in July.
