Two youngsters entered into a verbal spat at the tent set up by National Students Union of India on the Panjab University (PU) campus, here on Thursday afternoon.

A call by the university security staff sent the police into tizzy and a large number of policemen rushed to the spot.

The students tore each other's clothes and exchanged blows. Later, the NSUI claimed that they had a spat over some personal matter. The identity of the students has not been revealed.

NSUI chairman Bhupinder Bhatth said, "They are the students of the university. It was a small matter." Other students and groups, however, claimed that they were outsiders camping at the NSUI tent.

The police said that by the time they reached the spot, the boys had left and it was a minor exchange of words between the two.
