22-year-old student hangs self at MDU hostel

A final year student of MA, economics, at Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU) committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan in her hostel room on Wednesday evening.


Anu Devi, 22, who belonged to Jind district, was spotted hanging in room number 65 of Ganga hostel at 6pm by hostellers. On seeing her hanging, the girls raised the alarm and alerted the hostel warden. The warden informed the vice-chancellor's office.

Vice-chancellor RP Hooda and registrar SP Vats reached the spot. Urban Estate police station house officer Jai Narayan Verma was present when the body was brought down and forensic experts called in to probe the matter. Police started the probe by questioning the hostellers to ascertain the reason behind the suicide.

MDU sources said the incident was the result of a fallout between the victim and her family. Two of the victim's brothers are policemen posted in Rohtak.

No suicide note was found.

A 22-year-old student of the College of Home Sciences of Chaudhary Charan Singh Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar, was found dead in the hostel on April 8. Police had recovered a suicide note from the spot but the matter is still under investigation.

Around 200 Pakistani pilgrims headed for a Sufi shrine in Indian Punjab have been refused entry into India, a media report said on Friday. The Pakistanis wanted to attend the annual Urs of Hazrat Mujaddid Alif Sani at Sirhind in Punjab, the Dawn reported.
