The police on Saturday arrested a 22-year-old man who was posing as an IAS officer and forcing the principal of a government college in Sector 14 for admitting a girl to the hostel.

As per the police, a teacher in Government College for Girls, Sector 14, Manju Singh, submitted a complaint to the police on Saturday that a person, posing as an IAS officer, had been threatening the college principal in connection with the admission of a girl to the college hostel.

When the police received information, they had laid a trap in Sector 14 here and arrested the person on Saturday.

The accused was identified as Harpreet Singh, a resident of Hoshiarpur.

He had obtained a BA degree and was preparing for the IAS entrance exam. His father works at a roadside eatery in Mohali. He had called up the college principal 2-3 days ago and had offered to pay a donation of `1 lakh for admitting a girl to the college hostel.

The principal had then invited him to the college. He went with Manju Singh to see the college and the hostel.

However, Manju Singh informed him that seats in the hostel would be allotted only on the basis of merit.

After that, he started threatening the principal. Manju Singh lodged a complaint, on behalf of the college, with the police.

The accused had posed as an IAS officer even before the deputy commissioner of police (DCP), Panchkula, and had complained to him that the police were not co-operating with him for filing a complaint. Following this, the DCP ordered an investigation into the entire case.

Station house officer of Sector 14 police station inspector Suresh Kumar said, “On the complaint of the college principal, we reached there but by that time, he had left. We traced his tower location, which was somewhere nearby. We called him up and he just came, after which we arrested him.”

A case under cheating and criminal breach of trust was registered against him at the Sector 14 police station.
