Three devotees were killed and 13 others injured when a truck hit a tempo on the Sirsa rivulet bridge near Sirsa Nangal village, about 12 km from Rupnagar, on late Thursday night.

The truck hit the tempo with registration number PB 10 EG-2866, carrying devotees to the Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh, from the rear.

This led the tempo driver to lose control causing it to overturn.

The deceased have been identified as Tari Singh, 35, Chamkaur Singh, 45, and Hardeep Singh, 17. The injured have been admitted to the Rupnagar civil hospital.

The names of some of the injured that Hindustan Times could access are Shadi Singh, Bara Singh, Avtar Singh, Jagat Singh, Sohan Singh, Harbans Singh, Sarabjit Kaur and Mandeep Kaur.

Tempo driver Mohan Singh said the victims belonged to Nanakpur village near Malerkotla. The police have registered a case against the truck driver.

This is the second such accident in the past three days in which devotees coming from Naina Devi were killed in Rupnagar district.

On Wednesday, four devotees were killed and 32 others were injured when a Tata-407 fell into Sirhind canal near Jhamluti village, 10 km from Rupnagar.
