The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) rescued three members of a family, who were allegedly mentally challenged and confined in a house for the past about seven years.

The family comprising a woman, her daughter and son were rescued on Wednesday after the DLSA received a complaint from human rights activists Tejinder Singh Sudan and Parminder Singh, through Shamsher Singh, caretaker of Prabh Asra, a destitute home.

In the application, the activists had stated that three unattended mentally challenged persons were living isolated in a house in Phase 9, SAS Nagar, for the past seven years and there was even no one to feed them.

Chief judicial magistrate-cum-secretary of DLSA Tarntaran Singh Bindra brought the matter to the notice of DLSA chairman PP Singh and member secretary, Punjab Legal Services Authority, Chandigarh, Munish Singal.

With the help of police team, the victims were rescued and taken to civil hospital in Phase 6 for treatment. As per requirement, the patients should be admitted to mental hospital, Amritsar, for treatment.

Rescued woman's husband Jatinder Singh Baidwan stayed with them earlier and used to take care of them. Though Baidwan was getting old- age pension, he left the house as he was not able to meet the needs of his family.

One of the relatives of the inmates, who stay in Sector 33, Chandigarh, has been informed about the incident.
