Police sources said those arrested included alleged mastermind Jai Nath, Pawan Kumar of Deep Complex in Hallomajra and the latter's friends Rinku, Deepak and Raju.

Initially, accused Pawan Kumar, 23, was apprehended within three hours of the crime on Sunday evening from near the poultry farm chowk while he was trying to flee the city, Sector 31 police station SHO Jaspal Singh said. The scrap dealer was killed owing to a grudge Nath harboured against him, the SHO added.

DSP (south) BS Negi claimed that during preliminary questioning, Pawan disclosed that Jai Nath of Panchkula was the mastermind behind the crime. Nath had allegedly approached Pawan and offered to pay him Rs. 50,000 for beating up Siya Ram since the latter had roughed up Nath a few days back.

Pawan claimed after taking the money, he rallied youngsters Deepa, Rinku, Ashiq and Raju who along with Pawan consumed liquor before proceeding to beat up Siya Ram.

They caught hold of Siya Ram at about 9.30pm on Sunday while he was returning home in Deep Complex, Hallomajra. The four accomplices of Pawan allegedly hit Siya Ram in the head with empty liquor bottles. Siya Ram sustained grievous injuries and died.

After Pawan spilled the beans, the remaining accused were apprehended. Sixth accused Ashiq is absconding.
