New attendance grading system for engineering students, issue of poor financial condition of constituent colleges and some key appointments by the syndicate will be on the table for Panjab University (PU) senators' consideration, for their next meeting on Sunday morning.

There were around 75 matters for the senate's consideration and 28 items for ratification, apart from some supplementary issues, informed an official.

He added that the senate would take up the proposal of engineering and technology faculty to start grading of students' attendance. The students with 'F' grade or a poor performance will have to reappear in the subsequent university examination, as well as internal assessment examination for that subject.

The new 'R' grade category will be awarded in the case of poor class or lab attendance. These candidate's will have to repeat the course of instruction in that subject. The syndicate had approved this matter in a 2012 meeting. Earlier, there was only one grade for poor academic, as well as attendance records.

The senate would also discuss the sanction of `48 lakh for the renovation of university's outer reading hall and construction of two children parks on the campus at a cost of approximately `15 lakh.

The appointments of dean, student welfare, Navdeep Goyal, among others, which took place in August were also part of the senate agenda. The controversy surrounding PU student council polls and allegations of rigging by some student groups may become ground for discussion on the appointment of DSW as it took place merely a month ahead of the elections.

Sources also said that vice-chancellor VK Grover had proposed some other name for the coveted post, but it was turned down by the syndicate and Goyal's name was cleared for appointment.

But, it was very unlikely that syndicate's decision of his appointment would be sent back for consideration, as the same group which was in favour of his appointment was in majority in the senate as well, the source further added.

Apart from this, the senate was also likely to discuss the issue of deliberations with Punjab government on poor financial condition of PU constituent colleges in the state as the university is spending around `7 crore on these colleges every year, but earnings were merely around `1.5 crore. A PU committee had recommended increase in fee of BA, BCom and BSc and allow colleges to increase number of seats in the colleges.
