754 rescued from child labour in six years: minister

Haryana health minister Rao Narender Singh on Thursday said that the state government had rescued 754 children from child labour from 2007 to 2013 and framed charges in such cases.

Apart from this, 646 cases of violations of the child rights act had been detected out of which convictions had been made in 492 cases and fine of about `50 lakh had been imposed.

Speaking during the launch of workshop 'Strengthening child rights in the cotton farming districts of Haryana and Punjab' organised by IKEA Foundation, Save the Children and its partners Breakthrough and Pratham on the occasion of the World Day Against Child Labour here, he launched the workshop by signing the pledge.

Punjab finance minister Parminder Singh Dhindsa was also present on the occasion.

Rao Narender Singh said an awareness campaign against child labour was being organised in the state and statewide programmes were organised between November 14 and 30 every year to create awareness.

He said chances of diseases like TB and asthma increase in children engaged in cotton farming. Appreciating the efforts of private organisations, he said these organisations had rescued many children from child labour during the past many years.
