A month after BJP Kisan Morcha president Om Prakash Dhankar landed himself in a controversy by claiming to "arrange" Bihari wives for unmarried youths of Haryana if his party is voted to power in the state, scores of married women originally hailing from Bihar and Odisha tied Rakhi to him during an event at Jhajjar on Sunday.

As per rituals of Raksha Bandhan, Dhankar felicitated them with `501, sweets and shawls as a gift to mark the brother-sister relationship.

Vowing to stand by them through thick and thin, Dhankar ensured security to girls from other states, especially from Bihar and northeastern states, who are married in Haryana.

Urging the government to develop a mechanism to keep a check on such marriages to prevent human trafficking by kin of unmarried youths, he said once a girl of the marriageable age gets married, she deserved security in form of property rights and respect in society.

Notably, Dhankar during a political rally in Jind had invited the wrath of Bihar women commission and social organisation from Bihar after he claimed to get Haryanvi youths married by arranging girls from Bihar.

Hse had later told mediapersons that he was misunderstood as his real intention was to redress the issue by making government implement a legal route to allow such marriages.

Political observers see this development as an attempt by Dhankar to defuse the controversy ahead of the state polls.

The difference in men to women ratio in Haryana continues to pose a challenge for several youths, who are either forced to lead a bachelor's life or get entangled in game of procuring women from states like Bihar, Odisha and north east.
