Good news for all those eagerly awaiting regional air connectivity from the city, as Monday onwards Air Mantra of Religare Ltd. would daily fly on Chandigarh-Amritsar and Chandigarh-Jammu routes. Earlier in 2010, Jet had started a flight to Amritsar on a trial basis, but had closed operations within days.

Air Mantra has two 18-seater Beechcraft aircraft, which would be used for these operations. Both flights to Jammu and Amritsar would be of around one-hour duration. Officials informed that these flights would add as a feeder for other airlines and would be complementing them rather than competing with them.

As of now, the airline has not been able to get a specific schedule. However, as per the unscheduled system, it would fly to Amritsar in the morning around 8:30 am and to Jammu in the evening around 7:30 pm. The flights would become a permanent feature after gauging the response.

Meanwhile, with these two flights becoming operational, the total number of flights from the city will go up to 18. Airport Director HS Toor said: "We welcome the airline and we hope that the service would attract passengers. As of now, no permanent schedule has been given to the airline to operate."

Connecting Chandigarh with two major destinations, Amritsar and Jammu, these two flights are bound to boost tourism. Talking to Hindustan Times, Aarti Sharma a resident of Sector 44, said: "The flight to Amritsar would be a boon for those wanting to visit the Golden Temple and for those wanting to pay obeisance at Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, the flight to Jammu would be a real advantage."

The flight to Amritsar would also be an advantage to those wanting to fly out of country, as they can opt for Amritsar as their base instead of Delhi.

Passengers left in lurch as flight to Mumbai cancelled
The GoAir Airline on Saturday cancelled its evening flight to Mumbai due to poor visibility. The passengers were left in a lurch, as the cancellation was announced last minute. While 50 passengers were accommodated and sent to Delhi by road, the rest have been booked on the Sunday flight. The officials of the airline regretted the cancellation and said it was not possible for them to fly, as the weather did not permit the same.
