Former chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Saturday slammed the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) for allegedly resorting to "organised and sustained intimidation and victimisation" of Congress workers and leaders by Akali goons supported by the police.

In a press statement here, Capt Singh condemned, what he claimed was, the "cover-up operation by the police" to shield and defend Akali goons.

He said that a few days ago a Youth Congress leader was shot dead in Tarn Taran, while a murderous attempt was made on the life of three-time MLA Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi.

He said instead of investigating the incidents and punishing the culprits, the state police were giving them a clean chit in so-called inquiries. "This (police probe) is just an eyewash," he said. "When Sodhi's PA suffered gunshot injuries, the police were claiming that no shots were fired."

The Congress leader said the criminal intimidation and arm-twisting of Congress workers would ultimately boomerang on the government.
