You may not have heard of Satnam Singh, but the 7-foot-plus basketball player from Punjab is fast making inroads into the world of international sports. Recently, actor Akshay Kumar met the 18-year-old in USA. The two discussed sports and talked about Satnam’s arduous journey to success, among other things.

“Satnam is an inspiration. What he has done to get where he is today — through tough training — just makes me want to push myself to another level for my next film,” says the actor.

Akshay adds that meeting the athlete has given him fresh perspective on how to approach his role in his next film, which is a remake of the sports drama, The Warrior (2011). “I’m playing a former Mixed Martial Art (MMA) champion in the film. I want people to see another side to my acting (he will be seen doing MMA for the first time in a film). Satnam has helped me come to terms with what I always knew I needed to do,” he says.

Meanwhile, Akshay also recently made it to Time magazine’s global list of the 50 Smartest Celebrities On Twitter. Asked about it, he bites the humble pie. “It came as more than a surprise.

It’s an honour to even be considered (for the honour). It’s probably one of the most gratifying moments … but as cool as it is, I’m not the kind of guy who likes to talk about achievements like these,” says the 46-year-old actor.

Cinematic power rules

Director Harry Baweja belives that the impact that a two-hour film can have cannot even be replicated by 20 books. Ministers were also delighted with the results, so much so that they made it tax-free in Punjab, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh.
